LA RESIDENCE is a fine old Maison de Maitre just off the main square of this thriving 13th Century Bastide
town in the heart of Gascony SW France. There are double doors into all the rooms which are spacious and airy.
The house is furnished elegantly with antiques or reproduction French furniture and objets d'art and there are plenty
of quiet areas in the house to sit and read. Though right in the middle of the town, La Residence is very peaceful behind
its 3 foot deep walls.
Valence-sur-Baise itself is completely self-contained
with 3 bakers, a butcher's, Petit Casino, Pharmacy, Tabac, Bank, Post Office and Tourist Office as as a weekly farmer's
market specialising in local produce, and a large Carrefour supermarket. There are 2 popular bar restaurants in the
town square serving 12 euro table d'hote lunches as well as local specialities. Down below the ramparts there's a
further bar restaurant by the riverside in the Port of Valence where canal boats moor up.
Local attractions include:
12th Century Abbaye de Flaran with its Monet, Pissaro, Bonnard, Cezanne, Rodin
and Henry Moore & season of concerts, exhibitions and summer events.
